Education

The Academy at City Theatre provides year-round youth arts education for ages 4-18.

Fall Classes begin in September. We are currently accepting enrollment for ALL programs listed below, including Junior Theatre, Children’s Theatre Workshops, Pizazz Song & Dance Troupe, The Whacky Actors (NEW), and our NEW Teen Musical Theatre troupe, the City Theatre Ratz.

Junior Theatre: 
Junior Theatre is an after-school program designed for ages 8-14, offering sessions lasting six weeks long from September through June. Junior Theatre offers full scholarships with no child turned away from participating. This program produces 5 shows each year on the Mainstage.

  • Tuition: $50 per session (sessions are 6 weeks long)
  • Class times:  3:30pm-6pm  on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons
  • Classes begin: September 8, 2014 for DOROTHY IN WONDERLAND.

Pizazz Song and Dance Troupe:
Pizazz Song and Dance Troupe, designed for ages 7-14, runs year-round. Weekly classes in voice, acting, and dance result in Broadway showstopper production numbers. These young performers entertain all over the Tampa bay area.

  • Tuition: $120 per month. Sibling discount is available.
  • Class times: 1pm – 6pm on Saturdays
  • Classes begin:  September 6, 2014

NEW THIS YEAR:  PEEWEE PIZAZZ: designed for ages 4-6.

  • Tuition: $40 per month.
  • Class times: 1pm – 2pm on Saturdays
  • Classes begin: September 6, 2014

Children’s Theatre Workshops:
Designed for ages 7-14, each session will include workshop classes in acting, singing and dancing, as well as rehearsal for the full-length production.  Each session culminates in a fully staged production on our mainstage. Pizazz Song and Dance Troupe members receive a discount on tuition.

  • Tuition: $300 per session. $50 non-refundable deposit is required.
  • Class times: 11am-1pm on Saturdays
  • Classes begin: September 13, 2014  for BYE BYE BIRDIE

Teen Musical Theatre: the City Theatre Ratz
Designed for ages 13-17, this NEW program will immerse young actors in the art of musical theatre. The curriculum includes voice and speech training, movement and dance training, and scene study, all of which gives the student insight into the workings of the theatre community.

Students will present a fully staged Broadway musical at the end of the course. Fall session will run September through November. Spring session will run February through April.  ***NEW THIS YEAR***  Pizazz Song and Dance Troupe members receive a discount on tuition.

  • Tuition: $300 per session. $50 non-refundable deposit is required.
  • Class times: 4:30pm – 6:30pm on Friday evenings
  • Classes begin: September 12, 2014 for GREASE

The Whacky Actors:
Training young actors, ages 12-17, in the art of IMPROV, while working with a script.  This is part of our community outreach program, and there will be several performance opportunities throughout the community. At the end of the session, students will be allowed to audition for PAID positions in Whacky Tales Theatre Company. Classes take place on Saturdays.

  • Tuition: $200 per session.
  • Class times: 4pm -6pm on Saturdays
  • Classes begin: September 5, 2014.

Summer Camps:
Summer Camps for ages 7-14 run June through August and offer full-day immersion musical theatre education, culminating in three fully staged productions on the main stage each summer, in addition to a one-week Audition/Monologue camp which features a showcase at the conclusion of the camp.

Apprentice Program:
The St. Petersburg City Theatre Apprentice Program is designed for youth ages 13-18 that has been ongoing since the 1970’s, and is the bridge between City Theatre’s six show Mainstage Series and the Acadmemy programming.  Apprentices receive training and experience through their involvement with the mainstage productions, which they then bring to the classroom as teachers and teachers’ aides in the Junior  Theatre, Pizazz, and Summer Camps.
